The AATCC 9-Step Chromatic Transference Scale is an evaluation scale used to assess color loss, color transfer, and color staining in AATCC test methods.


The AATCC Gray Scale for Staining is designed to visually evaluate the degree of color staining from a tested textile to an adjacent material.
The scale consists of a series of gray chips arranged in numerical steps, each representing a visually perceptible difference in staining rating from 5 (no staining) to 1 (severe staining).


The AATCC Gray Scale for Color Change is designed to visually evaluate the changes in color of textiles resulting from colorfastness tests.
The scale consists of nine pairs of gray chips, which illustrate color differences and provide a corresponding fastness rating from 1 to 5, with 5 indicating excellent color retention and 1 indicating poor retention.
The AATCC gray scale measures color change. One half of each color chip pair is the same color as the untested specimen before colorfastness testing. The second half of the color chip ranges from the starting color (no loss of color) to white (loss of all color). The amount of contrast between the tested fabric and untested fabric is related to one of the pairs of gray color chips on the gray scale for color change.

Heat Sealed multifiber fabrics have a melted or fused edge, which reduces fraying and increases stability in the multifiber fabric test fabric. In AATCC and ISO colorfastness testing, heat sealed multifiber fabrics are used primarily to evaluate potential staining of a dyed or printed test sample on other textiles in wash tests where the test material experiences agitation and movement during the testing process. Multifiber fabrics with heat sealed edges should not be used in stationary tests because the raised melted edge can cause uneven staining between the multifiber fabric and test specimen, and results cannot be guaranteed.

sealed along the waste stripes and overcast stich serged along the filling stripes. This type of added edge finish prevents fraying and gives the multifiber test piece added stability. It can be used in rigorous colorfastness testing situations and is recommended for any tests that subject the multifiber fabric to increased agitation and movement.
