AATCC Gray Scale For Staining

$344.00 / Scale

The AATCC Gray Scale for Staining is designed to visually evaluate the degree of color staining from a tested textile to an adjacent material.

The scale consists of a series of gray chips arranged in numerical steps, each representing a visually perceptible difference in staining rating from 5 (no staining) to 1 (severe staining).

Description

A gray scale is used for visually evaluating changes in color of textiles resulting from colorfastness tests. There are two types of gray scale one for assessing color change and another for staining.

The Gray Scale is essential for textile product developers and manufacturers, as it helps determine the suitability of fabrics for specific applications based on their colorfastness. The AATCC Gray Scale for Staining is tool used to measure any unintended staining and color transfer on a 1 to 5 scale. This helps manufacturers determine whether a fabric will bleed or lose its color over time and under various conditions. The colors of AATCC Gray Scale for Staining color chips are the same as those specified in ISO 105-A03.

The transference of color from the test specimen to an adjacent specimen is evaluated using five standard pairs of color chips. One half of each standard is white, and the second half ranges from white to gray.

The bottom half of each color chip pair shows the untested starting color. The top half shows the color of the adjacent fabric after testing. A value of 5 corresponds to virtually no staining, whereas 1 indicates poor color-fastness.

Primary Uses by Industry

Industry Type Specifications
QA Testing To determine how much color transfers from a colored fabric to a white or neutral adjacent material during washing, rubbing, perspiration, or water exposure tests. The color fastness grade is equivalent to the gray scale numerical step that is considered to have the same color or contrast difference.
Using the AATCC Gray Scale for Staining Prepare the Test: Conduct a colorfastness test on the test specimen and stained adjacent textile, such as washing, rubbing, or exposure to artificial perspiration.

Gray Scale for Staining AATCC EP 2

Compare the visual perceived difference between the original unstained specimen and the newly stained specimen, with the differences represented by the grey scale pairs. The grade is that of the Grey scale pair whose color difference corresponds most closely to the color difference between the original and the stained specimens.

Evaluation using gray scale For general stained material Place an original unstained specimen and its corresponding stained specimen side by side, in the same plane and oriented in the same direction

For evaluating MFFPlace unstained mff specimens and their corresponding stained specimens side by side in the same plane and oriented in the same direction, aligning the stripes. Compare the visual difference between unstained and stained specimen, and rate the visual difference based on the grey scale.

For stained crockmeter squares – Place a stained crocking square, place over white backing material, and use enough opacity underneath. After the test, place the adjacent (stained) fabric next to the gray scale chips.

Visual Assessment Under standardized lighting conditions, visually determine which gray chip most closely matches the degree of staining on the adjacent fabric.

Numerical step ratings range from:

5: No perceptible staining

4: Slight staining

3: Noticeable staining

2: Considerable staining

1: Severe staining

Proper Handling Use gloves to prevent contamination of the gray scale chips. With regular use of the AATCC Gray Scales, it is important to handle the product with care to extend the shelf life of the product. Extensive use of the AATCC Gray Scales when handled with less care, causes the gray scales get scuffed, scratched, and stained. Store the gray scale in its protective sleeve when not in use. Replace the gray scale annually to maintain accuracy. Ensure trained personnel perform the visual assessment under consistent lighting to reduce subjectivity.Ensure trained personnel perform the visual assessment and under consistent lighting to reduce subjectivity.
